Challenge: Vantage West wanted to accelerate innovation with Python and data science. But as a highly regulated financial institution with 200,000 members and $3 billion in assets, it needed to maintain enterprise-grade security for annual National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) examinations and member data protection.
Solution: Vantage West deployed the Anaconda Platform with cloud-based package scanning, vulnerability management, and governance capabilities integrated with its existing SSO and DevSecOps pipeline.
Results: Vantage West significantly strengthened its security posture, built a culture of cybersecurity awareness, maintained innovation velocity for member-facing features, and laid the foundation for 2026 AI initiatives. All of this was accomplished with steady-state management.
Vantage West Credit Union serves members across Arizona. Every day, members trust the organization with their financial futures and their most sensitive data. For Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer Jim Jenkins, that trust is non-negotiable.
Jenkins joined Vantage West with a clear mission: Enable innovation while maintaining the uncompromising security standards that financial institutions demand.
The Challenge: Security Without Stifling Innovation
Vantage West operates in a highly regulated environment. The NCUA examines its practices and protocols annually, with stringent expectations around developer security and data protection.
“If there are issues or concerns, we have to address those before they come back the next year,” Jenkins notes. “So it’s important for us to maintain programs—especially around developer security—that meet the regulatory compliance standards we’re held to. But we also need to maintain the velocity that’s necessary to deliver new features and functionalities for our members.”
The organization faced a dilemma common in financial services: How do you enable developers and data scientists to leverage Python and open-source tools while ensuring every package meets enterprise security standards?
“Unless you’re one of the major banks, financial institutions generally aren’t staffed to do a tremendous amount of work in-house around scanning and securing the different packages that are being pulled down,” Jenkins explains. “So we needed to outsource that to a trusted partner.”
The alternative (manually scanning every Python package) simply wasn’t feasible. Going fully open-source would have required scanning every package manually. Blocking Python entirely would have handicapped the organization’s ability to compete and innovate. Vantage West needed a third path.
The Anaconda Decision
Jenkins came to Vantage West with firsthand experience using Anaconda in previous roles at enterprise technology companies and financial institutions. “What was nice about the platform was that it had been updated significantly over time,” Jenkins recalls. “The capability was so much greater in the way you were managing security that it just made sense.”
Three factors drove the decision:
Built-in Security: “There’s built-in functionality that helps us ensure that the different packages we’re pulling down from Anaconda have already been scanned, reviewed, and deemed acceptable.”
Windows Integration: “We’re a Microsoft stack shop, and the way that Anaconda integrated with Windows really made it much easier for our support team.”
Flexible Licensing: “We weren’t expected to buy a user license across all of the people in the organization. It was a natural growth or organic growth model for us.”
Smooth Implementation and Integration
“Having Anaconda be cloud-based for us makes a lot of sense because the level of support that we have to provide is minimalized,” Jenkins explains. “Onboarding Anaconda was super simple from our perspective.”
Rather than a mass rollout, Vantage West took a personalized approach: “We set meetings. I had one of my security analysts meet with the Anaconda team. They installed Anaconda. We did it the proper way. We made sure that firewalls were open and they were able to get updates without any problems.”
The investment paid off: “We didn’t really get issues after onboarding.”
For Vantage West, Anaconda isn’t a standalone tool—it’s part of a much larger DevSecOps ecosystem. “We do what’s called SAST (statis application security testing) scanning,” Jenkins explains. “Anything that goes into the repo gets scanned to ensure that there are no vulnerabilities. The pull request is not approved unless it is vulnerability-free.”
The Results: Security, Culture, and Velocity
When asked how he measures Anaconda’s success, Jenkins doesn’t hesitate: “At the end of the day, what I look at is, are we more secure than we were before we used Anaconda? And definitively, I can say yes. We are more secure.”
When you walk into the Executive Coalition with a risk assessment, they understand the potential business impact immediately and want to know what we’re doing to mitigate that,” Jenkins explains. “Having tools like Anaconda in place gives us credible answers.
Beyond technical controls, Jenkins also says Anaconda contributed to “building a culture of cybersecurity awareness where the developers and the data science engineers and the folks that are using Anaconda have a better understanding that cybersecurity is important.”
Jenkins connects these security investments directly to member relationships: “Security is about engendering trust in every aspect of management of their information. That delivers a more reliable and trustworthy infrastructure to store their money.”
From an operational perspective, Anaconda achieved minimal ongoing overhead with maximum security value: “Onboarding was great. Regular support was great and it’s just steady state now.”
Enabling AI Transformation
For Vantage West, Anaconda isn’t just solving today’s challenges—it’s enabling tomorrow’s opportunities.
“In 2026, we’re expecting a bigger build-out for AI use cases,” Jenkins explains. “We have to get the data in the right order, and then once the data is in the right order, we can start building out the use cases.”
Jenkins and his team are transforming Vantage West’s data architecture to what he calls “atomized” data sets, which are reusable building blocks that can support multiple systems. “That LEGO piece is the same LEGO, it’s just used in multiple places,” Jenkins explains. “You now have a dataset that’s available to be indexed by your AI infrastructure as a RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), and then that information becomes available across a much wider conversation for use within the organization.”
With Python as the language of AI, Vantage West’s investment in secure Python infrastructure through Anaconda positions them to move quickly as AI opportunities emerge.
The Steady State: Confidence at Scale
Perhaps the most telling indicator of Anaconda’s success at Vantage West is what Jenkins doesn’t talk about: drama, firefighting, or ongoing challenges.
This means developers can access the packages they need without security bottlenecks, the security team has confidence that packages meet their standards, regulators see evidence of mature security practices, and innovation continues at the velocity members expect.
By partnering with Anaconda to solve the fundamental challenge of Python package security, Vantage West built a foundation that satisfies stringent regulatory requirements while protecting sensitive member data. The platform enables developers to move quickly, builds organizational culture around security awareness, and positions the credit union for AI transformation.
“That’s the value Anaconda brings,” Jenkins reflects. “It’s the ability for us to know that whatever we’re pulling down, however we’re processing our data with different Python packages, that it is done in a secure way.”
