Anaconda has acquired Outerbounds.
But this isn’t really about an acquisition. It’s about a deeper shift: the way we’ve been building software no longer works for AI.
For decades, software development has operated on a stable assumption. If you provide the same input, you should expect the same output. That assumption shaped everything around it, from how code was written to how systems were tested, deployed, and governed. The entire operating model of software depended on predictability.
AI breaks that model.
Modern AI systems are not deterministic. They are probabilistic and continuously evolving. The same input can produce different outputs. Behavior changes over time as those systems accumulate context, retrain, as data shifts, and as feedback loops compound. These systems learn, and in doing so, they drift.
Building is easy now. Understanding is hard.
There’s a second shift happening that’s easier to miss, but just as important. As my friend Bryan Finster, Principal Architect at ACI Worldwide, often points out, “the bottleneck is no longer developers.” Teams can generate code, workflows, and even entire systems faster than ever before.
The challenge now is understanding, controlling, and operating what has been created. For example, just this March, an AI agent inside Meta posted advice directly to an internal forum, bypassing the human review step it was designed to follow. Another employee acted on it, and sensitive data was exposed to unauthorized engineers. The agent had guardrails, but they weren’t enforced in live conditions.
Earlier this spring, two malicious versions of LiteLLM, one of the most widely used Python middleware packages for building LLM applications, appeared briefly on PyPI as part of the TeamPCP supply chain attack. For nearly two hours, the packages silently harvested credentials from AI developer environments, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud configurations before anyone caught it. Teams were building fast, but no one was watching the dependencies underneath.
That combination introduces a tension inside the system that did not exist before.
On one side, the intelligence layer is becoming less predictable. On the other, the foundation that supports it still needs to be stable. In fact, it needs to be more stable than ever before.
If you can’t reproduce the environment, you can’t understand the behavior. If you can’t understand the behavior, you can’t govern it. And if you can’t govern it, you can’t deploy it with confidence at scale.
More tools made the problem harder to manage
Today, many enterprise AI-native development systems are assembled piecemeal. One tool for development, another for orchestration, another for deployment, another for governance. Each solves a specific problem and does it well.
But the system that emerges from combining them is often fragmented, because environments drift between development and production. Data pipelines lose alignment with AI-native applications. CI/CD pipelines lose lineage, causing misalignment with governance. Models behave differently once deployed. Governance gets layered on after the fact, rather than embedded in how the system operates.
Decades ago, W. Edwards Deming made this same observation in a different context. A system is not the sum of its parts, and optimizing components in isolation can degrade the system’s overall performance. Without coordination and a shared structure, variation increases, and understanding decreases. (Shoutout to John Willis for all of the conversations we’ve had about Deming’s principles over the years).
The architecture hasn’t caught up with the nature of AI
In traditional software, reducing variation was always the goal. In AI-native systems, variation is inherent at the model layer. That can’t be removed, so you need to control everything around it.
This creates a new kind of balance. The model layer is inherently nondeterministic, but the underlying infrastructure must be deterministic to produce reliable outcomes. Environments, dependencies, workflows, skills, connectors, and execution paths must be consistent and reproducible for the overall system to remain understandable. And this is where the idea of an AI-native development platform begins to make sense.
When people hear the word “platform”, they often think about a product or a set of features. That is not what is needed here. What is needed is a system that connects layers that have previously been treated as separate. At a high level, those layers include the deterministic foundation, the nondeterministic intelligence, the orchestration of workflows, and the governance mechanisms that make everything observable and controllable.
The absence of a unifying layer across these components is what has led to fragmentation and failed AI prototypes. Creating that layer is what this acquisition is all about.
Two strengths, one system. From fragmented tools to a working whole.
This is where the combination of Anaconda and Outerbounds becomes meaningful.
Anaconda has long operated at the foundation layer within development. It manages environments, dependencies, and the trusted open source packages that a large portion of enterprise AI depends on. It provides the structure that ensures what is built can be reproduced and governed.
Outerbounds, through Metaflow, was designed to address a different problem. It focuses on orchestration, workflow execution, and lineage in environments where systems are dynamic and do not behave the same way twice. It was built in production environments where reliability was not optional.
Individually, these capabilities are valuable. Together, they form a continuous system.
For the first time, the environment where systems are developed and the infrastructure where they operate can be aligned. Reproducibility does not break at deployment. Governance is not something applied after the fact. Lineage does not disappear once a model is running in production.
What emerges is not a collection of tools, but a platform that can be understood and managed end-to-end.
This is a new architecture
Software is becoming continuous rather than static. It is becoming adaptive rather than fixed. And it is becoming probabilistic rather than deterministic.
When systems behave this way, the lines that used to separate building, deploying, and operating them stop holding. Those changes collapse the boundaries between development, deployment, and operation, and governance can no longer be treated as a separate step applied at the end.
Everything becomes interconnected. And when that happens, the question is no longer how well each component performs in isolation but whether the system as a whole can be understood, controlled, and improved over time.
This is where the highest leverage exists.
The teams that succeed in this development revolution will be those that can consistently operate fully within AI-native best practices, explain how those systems behave, and adapt them without losing control.
This is why the Outerbounds acquisition matters
It’s about aligning around a shared understanding of where determinism needs to exist in a system that is otherwise becoming nondeterministic. The foundation must remain stable, because everything built on top of it is going to keep evolving.
Once that foundation is in place, iteration becomes learning. Deployment becomes a continuation of development. Governance becomes part of how the system operates from the start.
That is the AI-native shift that is underway. And this is an early step toward building what it has been missing.
